In the Administered Pricing Mechanism till March 31, 2002, most of the business activities relating to the petroleum sector were confined to companies in the public sector. The erstwhile Oil Coordination Committee (OCC) was the nodal agency responsible for subsidy administration, development, planning, exports, imports, distribution, planning, coordination, data maintenance etc.
On the eve of deregulation from April 01, 2002, the Apex Body of OCC in its meeting chaired by the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas advised members to expedite formation of an organised body that could represent all the petroleum and related organisations in private, public and joint sectors. This body would act as an interface for the oil industry with Government, regulatory authorities, public and representative bodies of traders in the market.
An ad hoc body was formed immediately after the aforesaid meeting with Shri M. A. Pathan as Chairman and the Executive Director, OCC as interim Director General.

- The Petroleum Federation of India (PetroFed) was registered under the Societies Act 1860 on 7th August, 2002 as a Society of Indian and International entities in the hydrocarbon sector to promote industry growth in line with Public/National Policies.
- It acts as an oil industry interface with the Government, regulatory authorities, public and representative bodies of traders.
- It helps in resolution of issues and facilitates evolution of hydrocarbons related policies and regulations. It organises seminars, conferences, workshops and brings out study reports and a quarterly journal.
- It represents the industry on Government bodies, committees and task forces. It was a member of the Committee for Review of Control Orders set up by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG) and also a member of sub-groups of MoP&NG for the XI & XII Plans.
- Assisting MoP&NG in diverse activities of the World Petroleum Council, facilitating industry interaction for trade with various countries, including Australia and Pakistan and participation in India-Africa interaction.
- It functions through 16 committees from member organisations and other experts, covering all aspects of oil and gas industry and has been nominated as nodal agency on the WTO Committee formed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India.
- To recognize and honour the contribution of corporates and individuals, it has instituted 13 Annual Awards in 11 categories which are open to all oil & gas companies operating in the country without any entry fee.
- It works for global competitiveness of the petroleum industry and amongst its objectives is promotion of energy conservation and health, safety & environment protection measures and to work for greater participation of petroleum industry to venture into alternate hydrocarbon sources.
- It aims to be a think tank of the petroleum industry and promotes cooperation between members on matters of mutual interest
Management & Operations
The Management and Operations of PetroFed are guided and overseen by a Governing Council formed in accordance with the Bye Laws of the Society.
The Governing Council presently has 14 Members. PetroFed has a full time Director General, three Directors, two Joint Directors and two Assistant Directors.
